See Sightseeing Model CoursesFor a day trip to Ise Jingu, we recommend a plan of about 7 hours: leave Nagoya at 8:00 a.m., visit Geku (about 50 min), then Naiku (about 90 min), then Oharai-machi and Okage Yokocho (about 80 min), and be back in Nagoya by 3:00 p.m. By long tradition, worshippers visit Geku before Naiku, and a chartered vehicle gets you between them with no waiting.
This article lays out the Ise Jingu day-trip model course with a full timetable. It also compares trains and buses, rental cars and chartered taxis (NearMe) to help you choose how to get around.
1. At Ise Jingu, Travel Time Comes from the Round Trip and the Gap Between Geku and Naiku | Travel Times by Transport Option
The round trip between Nagoya and Ise Jingu takes more than 3 hours, and Geku and Naiku are some distance apart. What matters most is how you get from Geku to Naiku, and how you deal with the crowds around Naiku. Here are approximate travel times for each option.
| Segment | Train & Bus (incl. walking) | Rental Car | Chartered Taxi (NearMe) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nagoya → Geku | About 1 hr 20–30 min by Kintetsu Limited Express (to Iseshi Station) + about 5 min walk | About 2 hrs (traffic on weekends and in peak season) | About 1 hr 50 min, direct from your hotel in Nagoya |
| Geku → Naiku | About 15 min by bus (plus waiting time) | About 15 min + finding parking near Naiku | About 10 min |
| Naiku → Oharai-machi & Okage Yokocho | A short walk | Walk from the parking lot | Right next to Naiku; leave your bags in the vehicle |
| Ise → Nagoya | About 1 hr 20–30 min by Kintetsu Limited Express | About 2 hrs (longer in traffic) | About 1 hr 20 min, to your chosen location in Nagoya |
*These travel times are only estimates. They may vary with traffic, weather, road congestion and parking availability on the day.
What each option offers
- Train & bus: It keeps costs down, and the Kintetsu Limited Express runs straight from Nagoya. However, you will have to wait for a bus from Geku to Naiku, and buses get crowded on holidays and over the New Year period.
- Rental car: It gives you plenty of freedom, but parking around Naiku fills up easily; early morning is the least crowded time. The driver also has to keep driving and parking throughout the visit.
- Chartered taxi (NearMe): It takes you straight from your hotel in Nagoya and lets you visit Geku and then Naiku with no waiting. At Naiku the vehicle waits in the parking lot, so you can leave bags and coats inside while you visit.

8:00 Departure – 9:50 Travel to Ise
You leave from your hotel or chosen location in Nagoya and head to Ise on the Higashi-Meihan and Ise Expressways. With no transfers, you can sit back and relax in the vehicle on the way.
9:50–10:40 Geku (about 50 min)

By long tradition, a visit to Ise Jingu starts at Geku and then moves on to Naiku. Pay your respects at Geku (Toyouke Daijingu) and stop by Magatama Pond. Admission is free.
10:50–12:20 Naiku (about 90 min)

Cross Uji Bridge and follow the gravel approach. Purify your hands in the Isuzu River, then continue to the main sanctuary. It is about 800 m each way from Uji Bridge to the main sanctuary, so expect to walk 1.5–2 km in total. The vehicle waits in the parking lot, so you can leave suitcases and coats inside while you visit. Admission is free.
12:20–13:40 Oharai-machi & Okage Yokocho (about 80 min)

3. Adding Meoto Iwa and Choosing Your Charter Length
The price depends on how long you charter the vehicle. The 8-hour course lets you add Meoto Iwa (the Wedded Rocks at Futami Okitama Shrine).
| Charter Length | Price (tax and tolls included) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 6 hours | ¥61,500 | A shorter trip focused on Geku and Naiku |
| 7 hours | ¥68,500 | The standard route covering Geku, Naiku and Okage Yokocho |
| 8 hours | ¥75,500 | Adding Meoto Iwa (Futami Okitama Shrine) |
The price includes chartered transport to and from Nagoya (including travel between Geku, Naiku and the Futami area), expressway tolls, parking fees and service charges. To avoid the crowds, you can ask to start earlier, for example at 7:00 a.m. (shrine visiting hours change with the season).
4. Comparing Transport Options | Train & Bus / Rental Car / Chartered Taxi (NearMe)
Each option has its strengths and weaknesses. For Ise Jingu, where the round trip is long, a chartered taxi stands out because there are no transfers and you can visit Geku and then Naiku with no waiting. In busy periods such as New Year, combining it with an early start works even better.
| Criteria | Train & Bus | Rental Car | Chartered Taxi (NearMe) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel time efficiency | △ Transfers and waiting time | △ Finding parking makes timing unpredictable | ◎ No transfers; straight from your hotel |
| Route flexibility | △ Depends on routes and timetables | ◎ High (but limited by parking) | ◎ Visit order and time at each stop are adjustable |
| Driving and navigation burden | ◎ None | × The driver carries the burden throughout the trip | ◎ None (everyone can focus on sightseeing) |
| Handling crowds in peak and autumn foliage seasons | △ Buses and trains are crowded on holidays and at New Year | × Parking around Naiku gets congested | ○ No need to find parking (an early start also helps avoid crowded approaches) |
| Group and large-party travel | △ Everyone pays their own fare | ○ Depends on the vehicle; may need more than one car | ◎ One vehicle price for up to 9 people |
| Luggage and souvenirs | △ Carried at every transfer | ○ Can stay in the car, but carried on and off each stop | ◎ Leave them in the vehicle while you sightsee |
| Cost (small groups) | ◎ Cheapest | ○ Depends on group size | △ More expensive for small groups |
With a chartered taxi, the cost per person drops as your group grows. Here are approximate per-person costs for the 7-hour plan (¥68,500).
*Admission fees, food and drinks are extra.
| Group Size | Approx. Cost per Person |
|---|---|
| 2 people | About ¥34,300 |
| 3 people | About ¥22,800 |
| 4 people | About ¥17,100 |
| 6 people | About ¥11,400 |
| 9 people | About ¥7,600 |
*This comparison shows general tendencies. Actual conditions vary with local roads, parking and the availability of public transport.
