Nara Sightseeing Itinerary: A 5-Hour Half-Day Private Taxi Tour from Kyoto or Osaka
Ready to save on your trip with NearMe?🚐
See Sightseeing Model CoursesThe classic half-day Nara itinerary is a roughly 5-hour loop of Todaiji Temple → Nara Park → Kasuga Taisha Shrine → Kofukuji Temple. Take a private chartered taxi straight from your Kyoto or Osaka hotel to Nara Park and you skip the transfers and leave your bags in the car, so you get about 3 full hours of sightseeing in Nara.
This article walks you through a half-day Nara itinerary with a timed schedule. It also compares trains and buses, rental cars and private chartered taxis (NearMe) to help you choose how to get there.
1. In Nara, the Sights Are Walkable; Getting There and Back Is the Hard Part | Travel Times by Transport
Todaiji, Nara Park, Kasuga Taisha and Kofukuji all sit in the same area, so once you arrive you can walk between them. What takes time is the round trip between Kyoto or Osaka and Nara. Here are approximate travel times for each option.
| Route | Train / Bus (incl. walking) | Rental Car | Private Chartered Taxi (NearMe) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kyoto Station area → Nara Park | About 70–90 min including transfers and waiting (walk or bus from the station) | About 60–80 min + time to find parking (lots fill up and roads jam in autumn foliage season) | About 60 min, straight from your hotel (expressway tolls included) |
| Namba (Osaka) area → Nara Park | About 60–80 min (including a ~20-min walk from the station) | About 50–70 min + time to find parking | Shorter than from Kyoto, leaving more time in Nara |
| Within Nara Park (Todaiji → Kasuga Taisha → Kofukuji) | Mostly on foot, about 15–25 min per leg | You have to move the car and park again | Leave your bags in the car as you go |
*These travel times are only estimates. They may vary with traffic, weather, road congestion and parking availability on the day.
What each option is like
- Train / Bus: The big plus is the low cost. On the other hand, you’ll have transfers and waiting time, and from the station to the Todaiji area it’s about a 20-minute walk or a bus ride.
- Rental car: You get plenty of freedom, but parking around Nara Park is limited and often full during autumn foliage season and on weekends and holidays. Whoever drives also has to deal with driving and parking throughout the trip.
- Private chartered taxi (NearMe): Go straight from your hotel to Nara Park, with no parking to find and no driving. After booking, you can adjust the departure time, stops and time at each spot to suit you.

9:00 Departure – 10:00 Arrive at Todaiji
We pick you up at your Kyoto hotel, Kyoto Station or another location of your choice. With no transfers, you can sit back and relax in the car on the way to Nara.
10:00–11:00 Todaiji Temple (about 60 min)

See the powerful Kongo Rikishi guardian statues at Nandaimon Gate and the Great Buddha (the seated Vairocana Buddha) in the Great Buddha Hall.
11:05–11:35 Nara Park (about 30 min)

This large park is home to more than 1,000 deer. You can buy deer crackers (shika senbei) at stalls in the park (fee applies). The deer are wild animals and will come up to you if you’re holding food. Young children should enjoy them together with an adult.
11:40–12:20 Kasuga Taisha Shrine (about 40 min)

Walk the approach lined with moss-covered stone lanterns. The shrine is said to have about 3,000 stone and hanging lanterns in total. Entering the cloister requires a separate admission fee.
12:25–12:45 Kofukuji Temple (about 20 min)

Explore the area around the Five-Story Pagoda. The pagoda is currently undergoing major restoration work (scheduled for completion in 2034), so how much of it you can see depends on when you visit. Check Kofukuji’s official website for the latest information. If you have time, we also recommend the National Treasure Museum and its statue of Ashura (separate admission fee and extra time required).
12:45–14:00 Return and Drop-off
We take you back to your chosen location in Kyoto. If you’d like to have lunch in Nara or rearrange the schedule, you can discuss changes after booking.
3. When Half a Day Isn’t Enough: Longer Plans and Nearby Spots

The half-day plan is ideal for the four classic sights: Todaiji, Nara Park, Kasuga Taisha and Kofukuji. If you’d also like to visit Toshodaiji or Yakushiji Temple, we recommend a plan of 6 hours or more.
| Charter Time | Price (tax, tolls included) | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 4 hours | ¥33,500 | Seeing the four classic sights efficiently |
| 5 hours | ¥40,500 | Seeing the four classic sights at a relaxed pace (this article’s itinerary) |
| 6 hours | ¥47,500 | Adding one or two spots such as Toshodaiji or Yakushiji |
Here are some other spots worth visiting.
- Mount Wakakusa: A viewpoint overlooking Nara Park. It is closed for part of the winter, so check before you go.
- Naramachi: A district of preserved old townhouses, perfect for browsing cafés and small shops.
- Heijo Palace Site Historical Park: The highlights are the reconstructed Suzakumon Gate and Daigokuden Hall.
- Horyuji Temple: It’s far from the Nara Park area, so it isn’t included in the 5-hour plan. We recommend extending your charter or visiting on another day.
4. Comparing Your Options | Train and Bus / Rental Car / Private Chartered Taxi (NearMe)
Each option has its strengths and weaknesses. During busy periods like autumn foliage season, when traveling with young children or older family members, or when visiting an area for the first time, a private chartered taxi really pays off, with no parking to find and no driving.
| Comparison | Train / Bus | Rental Car | Private Chartered Taxi (NearMe) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel time efficiency | △ Transfers and waiting time | △ Hard to predict once you add parking | ◎ No transfers, straight from your hotel |
| Route flexibility | △ Depends on routes and timetables | ◎ High (but limited by parking) | ◎ Order of stops and time at each can be adjusted |
| Driving and navigation | ◎ None | × The driver carries the burden all trip | ◎ None (everyone can focus on sightseeing) |
| Handling peak and foliage-season crowds | △ Risk of full trains/buses and waits | × Risk of traffic jams and full parking lots | ○ Affected by traffic, but no parking to find |
| Traveling as a group | △ Everyone pays a fare | ○ Depends on the car; may need more than one | ◎ One price per vehicle, up to 9 people |
| Bags and souvenirs | △ Carry them at every transfer | ○ Can stay in the car, but carried on and off | ◎ Leave them in the car while you sightsee |
| Cost (small groups) | ◎ Cheapest | ○ Depends on group size | △ Pricier for small groups |
*This comparison shows general trends. Actual conditions vary with local roads, parking and public transport options.
With a private chartered taxi, the cost per person drops as your group grows. Here’s the approximate cost per person for the 5-hour plan (¥40,500).
*Admission fees, food and drinks are extra.
| Group Size | Approx. Cost per Person |
|---|---|
| 2 people | About ¥20,300 |
| 3 people | About ¥13,500 |
| 4 people | About ¥10,200 |
| 6 people | About ¥6,800 |
| 9 people | About ¥4,500 |
5. Best Times to Visit Nara by Season
- Autumn (roughly late November to early December): The trees around Nara Park, mainly Japanese maples, turn vivid colors. Around Kasuga Taisha and Kofukuji, you can enjoy the autumn leaves and the deer together.
- Winter (December to February): There are relatively few tourists, so you can visit at a leisurely pace. For the Setsubun Mantoro lantern festival in February (Kasuga Taisha) and the Wakakusa Yamayaki hill burning in January (event day only), check event details in advance.
- Early morning to late morning: Before the tour groups arrive, it’s relatively quiet and great for photos.
