Kyoto Sightseeing Model Course | A 4-Hour Early-Morning Private Taxi Tour of Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera and Kinkaku-ji
Ready to save on your trip with NearMe?🚐
See Sightseeing Model CoursesFor a half-day Kyoto sightseeing model course, we recommend an early-morning plan that leaves at 6 a.m. and visits four temples and shrines in about 4 hours: Fushimi Inari Taisha → Kiyomizu-dera → Yasaka Pagoda and Ninenzaka → Kinkaku-ji. Kiyomizu-dera opens at 6 a.m., Fushimi Inari Taisha is open around the clock, and Kinkaku-ji opens at 9 a.m. Timing your visits to opening hours makes it much easier to avoid lines and get photos without crowds in the frame.
This article introduces a half-day Kyoto sightseeing model course with a full timetable. We also compare trains and buses, rental cars and private chartered taxis (NearMe) to help you choose how to get around.
1. Daytime Sightseeing in Kyoto Means Lots of Time Spent Getting Around | Travel Times by Transportation
During the day, traffic restrictions and a shortage of parking mean that simply getting around Kyoto takes time. On top of that, Fushimi Inari Taisha (south), Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Pagoda (east) and Kinkaku-ji (northwest) are spread across the city, so linking all four by public transportation requires several transfers. Here are rough travel times by mode of transportation.
| Route | Train/Bus (incl. walking) | Rental Car | Private Chartered Taxi (NearMe) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kyoto Station area → Fushimi Inari Taisha | About 5–10 min on the JR Nara Line + walk (limited service early in the morning) | About 15–20 min; limited parking near the approach | About 20 min, direct from your hotel |
| Fushimi Inari Taisha → Kiyomizu-dera | About 30–40 min by train + walk | About 15–20 min; little parking around Kiyomizu-dera | About 15 min |
| Kiyomizu-dera → Yasaka Pagoda and Ninenzaka | About 10 min on foot | Requires moving to another parking lot | About 10 min (then explore on foot) |
| Yasaka Pagoda → Kinkaku-ji | About 40–50 min by bus with transfers | About 25–30 min + time to find parking | Travel on quiet early-morning roads (time depends on road conditions) |
*The travel times above are estimates only. They may vary depending on traffic, weather, road congestion and parking availability on the day.
Features of Each Mode of Transportation
- Train/Bus: The appeal is keeping costs down. However, linking the four sites requires transfers, and service is limited early in the morning.
- Rental Car: Offers lots of flexibility, but parking in Kyoto is often scarce, and there are traffic restrictions during the day. Whoever is driving has to deal with driving and parking the whole time.
- Private Chartered Taxi (NearMe): Departs from your hotel, with no need to find parking or drive. Departures as early as the 5 a.m. hour can be arranged on request.

6:00 Departure – 6:20 Travel to Fushimi Inari Taisha
Depart from your chosen location, such as your hotel in Kyoto or Kyoto Station. The roads in the city are quiet in the 6 a.m. hour.
6:20–7:20 Fushimi Inari Taisha (About 60 Minutes)

This shrine is famous for its Senbon Torii, rows of vermilion torii gates. It is open around the clock and admission is free. With few people around early in the morning, you can take your time walking through the tunnels of gates.
7:35–8:35 Kiyomizu-dera (About 60 Minutes)

Kiyomizu-dera opens at 6 a.m. Early in the day, both the approach and the temple grounds are far calmer than in the daytime. An admission fee is charged separately.
8:45–9:10 Yasaka Pagoda and Ninenzaka (About 25 Minutes)

This Higashiyama walking route takes you from Kiyomizu-dera down Ninenzaka with views of Yasaka Pagoda (the five-story pagoda of Hokan-ji). In the 8 a.m. hour, you can stroll the quiet streets before the shops open.
9:15–9:50 Kinkaku-ji (About 35 Minutes)

Kinkaku-ji opens at 9 a.m. The route is planned so you can enter right after it opens. An admission fee is charged separately.
9:50–10:00 Return and Drop-Off
Return to your chosen location in Kyoto. Pick-up, drop-off and stopover points can be arranged after booking.
3. When 4 Hours Isn’t Enough: Choosing Your Charter Length
The fare depends on how long you charter the vehicle. If you’re starting later, we recommend skipping Kinkaku-ji or switching to the 5-hour plan.
| Charter Length | Fare (incl. tax and tolls) | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 3 hours | ¥23,000 | Those who want to focus on 2–3 sites in a short time |
| 4 hours | ¥30,000 | Those who want to visit all four sites starting at 6 a.m. |
| 5 hours | ¥37,000 | Those starting later or wanting a more relaxed itinerary |
If you’d like to spend a full day exploring beyond Kyoto, we also recommend the Amanohashidate & Ine Funaya 1-Day Private Taxi Tour (8 hours) and the Nara Half-Day Private Taxi Tour.
4. Comparing Transportation Options | Train/Bus, Rental Car and Private Chartered Taxi (NearMe)
Each mode of transportation has its strengths and weaknesses. During autumn foliage season, when daytime crowds are hard to avoid, when traveling with small children or older family members, or on a first visit to Kyoto, touring early in the morning by private charter offers clear advantages.
| Criteria | Train/Bus | Rental Car | Private Chartered Taxi (NearMe) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel time efficiency | △ Transfers and waiting time | △ Finding parking makes timing unpredictable | ◎ No transfers, direct from your hotel |
| Route flexibility | △ Depends on routes and timetables | ◎ High (but limited by parking) | ◎ Order of visits and length of stay can be adjusted |
| Burden of driving and navigating | ◎ None | × The driver carries the burden throughout the trip | ◎ None (everyone can focus on sightseeing) |
| Handling peak-season and autumn-foliage crowds | △ Risk of packed buses and lines | × Risk of traffic jams and full parking lots | ○ Early departure makes crowds easier to avoid (and no parking to find) |
| Travel for groups and larger parties | △ Fare required per person | ○ Depends on the vehicle; may need multiple cars | ◎ One fare per vehicle, up to 9 passengers |
| Handling luggage and souvenirs | △ Carry everything at every transfer | ○ Can be left in the car, but must be carried at each stop | ◎ Leave everything in the vehicle while sightseeing |
| Cost (for small groups) | ◎ Cheapest | ○ Depends on group size | △ Relatively expensive for small groups |
*This comparison shows general trends. Actual conditions vary depending on local roads, parking availability and how well-served the area is by public transportation.
With a private chartered taxi, the cost per person goes down as your group gets bigger. Here are approximate per-person costs for the 4-hour plan (¥30,000).
*Admission fees, meals and other expenses are not included.
| Group Size | Approx. Cost per Person |
|---|---|
| 2 people | approx. ¥15,000 |
| 3 people | approx. ¥10,000 |
| 4 people | approx. ¥7,500 |
| 6 people | approx. ¥5,000 |
| 9 people | approx. ¥3,300 |
5. Best Times to Visit Kyoto by Season
- Autumn (roughly late November to early December): This is generally considered the peak period for autumn leaves at Kyoto’s temples and shrines. For 2026, weather company forecasts (as of September) expect the leaves to turn on schedule or somewhat later than usual. Please check the latest foliage conditions before your trip.
- Winter: With relatively few tourists, you can visit in crisp, clear air. On snowy mornings, you may see unusual scenery at places like Kinkaku-ji (weather permitting).
- Early morning (year-round): Right after opening, there are fewer lines and fewer people in your photos, making it ideal for photography. Some shops and amulet counters may not be open yet, so if you plan to buy something, leave some extra time in your itinerary.

Q. Is a half-day or a full-day tour better for sightseeing in Kyoto?

Q. When do cancellation fees apply?
A. Cancellation is free up to 3 days before your ride date. From 2 days to 1 day before, the fee is 30% of the fare; from the day of the ride until the scheduled pick-up time, 50%; and after the scheduled pick-up time, 100%.
8. Summary
