See Sightseeing Model CoursesOkinawa’s sightseeing spots are spread across the north, central and south areas of the main island. The Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island are about 1.5 to 2 hours by car from Naha, and buses run infrequently in many areas, so how you get around matters as much as where you go.
In short, we recommend staying in Naha and taking day trips, picking a few areas you most want to see. This article covers the classic Okinawa sightseeing spots in the north, central and south areas, with directions, day-trip model courses, a sample 4-day/3-night itinerary, and a comparison of buses and rental cars. Toward the end, we also introduce chartered taxis as a way to reach areas that are hard to get to by public transportation.
*Information in this article is current as of October 2026. Opening hours, prices and crowd levels may change, so please check each facility’s official website for the latest information.

How the Areas Are Laid Out
The main island of Okinawa is long and narrow, running north to south. Heading north from Naha, you pass Chatan, Onna, Nago, Motobu and Nakijin, then Yanbaru at the far north; heading south, you reach Itoman and the rest of the southern area. The northern sights are far from Naha and far from each other, so plan on one area per day.
Three Tips for a Trip You Won’t Regret
- Focus on a few areas: If you try to cover the north, central and south in one day, you’ll spend most of it in the car. Stick to one or two areas per day.
- Allow extra travel time: Roads in Okinawa get congested during the tourist season, and travel times around Naha and on the way north are especially hard to predict. Leave plenty of room in your schedule.
- Check reservation requirements for popular spots: Some popular attractions in Okinawa require date- and time-specific tickets. Once you’ve decided where to go, check the official websites early.
2. Recommended Spots and Model Courses | Highlights and Directions by Area
Below are the highlights of each area, how to get there, and a sample day-trip model course. The model courses assume you’re traveling by car. Adjust times and stays to suit conditions on the day.
North | Churaumi Aquarium, Bise Fukugi Tree Road, Nakijin Castle Ruins

The ultimate classic of Okinawa sightseeing is the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Motobu. Its highlight is the huge “Kuroshio Sea” tank, and a visit usually takes about 2 to 3 hours. Adult admission is ¥2,180, paid at the ticket counter on the day. The nearby Bise Fukugi Tree Road is a popular walk along a path lined with trees, and the Nakijin Castle Ruins, a World Heritage Site, are in the same northern area.
How to get there: Highway buses and other services run from Naha to the Motobu Peninsula, but you may need to transfer, and the trip takes longer than by car. By rental car or other vehicle, allow about 1 hour 40 minutes from Naha. The Bise Fukugi Tree Road and Nakijin Castle Ruins are a short drive from the aquarium, so a car is the usual way to get around.
| Time | Spot | Suggested stay | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8:00 | Depart from your hotel in Naha, etc. | ― | About 1 hr 40 min to the north |
| 9:40 | Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium | About 150 min | See the giant Kuroshio Sea tank |
| 12:10 | Bise Fukugi Tree Road | About 30 min | Stroll through dappled sunlight |
| 12:45 | Nakijin Castle Ruins | About 20 min | World Heritage castle ruins |
| 13:20 | Arrive in Naha, tour ends | ― | Lunch or extra stops can be arranged |
North | A Scenic Ocean Drive to Kouri Island

Kouri Bridge, which crosses the blue sea, and the island’s Heart Rock are the big draws. Kouri Island is about 25 minutes by car from the Churaumi Aquarium. At low tide you can sometimes walk out to the rocks around Heart Rock, so it’s worth checking the tide and weather beforehand.
How to get there: Kouri Island is hard to reach by bus, so a car is the usual way to get there. You can combine it with the Churaumi Aquarium in one day.
| Time | Spot | Suggested stay | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8:00 | Depart from your hotel in Naha or a designated location | ― | About 1 hr 40 min to the north |
| 9:40 | Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium | About 180 min | Take your time at the main tank |
| 12:40 | Bise Fukugi Tree Road | About 25 min | Walk in the shade of the windbreak trees |
| 13:10 | Kouri Island (Kouri Bridge, Heart Rock) | About 95 min | Cross the bridge to the island |
| 15:10 | Arrive in Naha, tour ends | ― | About 9 hours in total |
North | Nature in Yanbaru (Cape Hedo, Daisekirinzan)

This area is for really getting into Yanbaru’s nature: Cape Hedo at the northern tip of the main island, the trekking trails of Daisekirinzan, and the mangrove boardwalk at Gesashi Bay. It’s a long way from Naha, so plan on a full day.
How to get there: Getting around Yanbaru by public transportation is difficult, so a car is the usual option. The one-way trip from Naha is long, so for a day trip we recommend an early start.
| Time | Spot | Suggested stay | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8:00 | Depart from your hotel in Naha or a designated location | ― | Head toward Yanbaru |
| 10:20 | Daisekirinzan | About 120 min | Trekking. Admission extra |
| 12:20 | Cape Hedo | About 40 min | Northernmost point of Okinawa’s main island |
| 13:15 | Gesashi Bay mangroves | About 120 min | Mangrove boardwalk. Canoe tours booked separately |
| 15:50 | Arrive in Naha, tour ends | ― | About 10 hours in total |
North | A Family-Friendly Half Day in Nago

The Nago area has lots of spots kids will love, including Nago Pineapple Park and Neo Park Okinawa. You can also stop at Michi-no-Eki Kyoda roadside station and Nago Central Park.
How to get there: Buses around Nago are infrequent, so a car is the most convenient way to get around. Allow about 1 to 1.5 hours from Naha.
| Time | Spot | Suggested stay | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9:00 | Depart from your hotel in Naha or a designated location | ― | Head toward Nago |
| 10:30 | Nago Pineapple Park | About 50 min | Tour the park by cart. Admission extra |
| 11:20 | Michi-no-Eki Kyoda | About 40 min | Lunch and shopping |
| 12:00 | Neo Park Okinawa | About 70 min | Get close to free-roaming birds and small animals |
| 13:10 | Nago Central Park (Sakura no Mori) | About 30 min | Views and a stroll |
| 15:00 | Arrive in Naha, tour ends | ― | About 6 hours in total |
*The cherry blossoms at Nago Central Park usually peak from late January to early February.
North | JUNGLIA OKINAWA (Yanbaru)
JUNGLIA OKINAWA is a theme park set in Yanbaru’s natural landscape that opened in July 2025. It sits in the Yanbaru region, straddling Nakijin Village (Kunigami District) and Nago City. Buses in the area are infrequent, so you’ll usually need a car. Date- and time-specific tickets may be required, so check the official website for opening hours, tickets and access.
How to get there: The usual way is by car from central Naha or Naha Airport. NearMe offers one-way chartered taxis to JUNGLIA OKINAWA from central Naha and the airport.
Central | Cape Manzamo, Blue Cave, Ryukyu Mura

Cape Manzamo, with cliffs overlooking the East China Sea, is a classic spot that’s easy to drop by for a ¥100 admission. At the Blue Cave, you can take in the view from Cape Maeda. Snorkeling, diving and other activities must be booked separately. At Ryukyu Mura, you can tour a cluster of traditional houses and try hands-on activities such as making your own shisa lion figure.
How to get there: Allow about 1 hour by car from Naha to Onna. Buses are infrequent, so a car is the easiest way to tour the area.
| Time | Spot | Suggested stay | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9:00 | Depart from your hotel in Naha or a designated location | ― | About 1 hr to Onna |
| 10:00 | Cape Manzamo | About 35 min | Ryukyu limestone cliffs and East China Sea views |
| 10:50 | Blue Cave area (Cape Maeda) | About 20 min | Viewing only. Activities extra |
| 11:20 | Ryukyu Mura | About 45 min | Traditional houses and hands-on activities |
| 13:00 | Arrive in Naha, tour ends | ― | About 4 hours in total |
South | War Memorial Sites (Former Navy Underground HQ, Peace Memorial Park, Himeyuri Monument)
This area lets you learn about Okinawa’s history by visiting the Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters, Peace Memorial Park and the Himeyuri Monument. It’s close to Naha and can be covered in half a day. Adult admission to the Himeyuri Peace Museum is ¥450. The Former Navy Underground Headquarters has stairs from the entrance, so visitors with mobility concerns should check ahead.
How to get there: Allow from about 20 minutes by car from Naha to the south. You can also take a bus from the city, but a car is more convenient if you’re visiting several sites. Because of opening hours, if you plan to visit all three sites, we recommend leaving by early afternoon.
| Time | Spot | Suggested stay | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14:00 | Depart from your hotel in Naha or a designated location | ― | Leave in the early afternoon |
| 14:20 | Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters | About 25 min | Admission extra |
| 15:20 | Peace Memorial Park | About 35 min | The Cornerstone of Peace and the Peace Flame |
| 15:55 | Himeyuri Monument & Himeyuri Peace Museum | About 20 min | Museum ¥450 for adults |
| 16:50 | Arrive in Naha, tour ends | ― | About 3 hours in total |
Naha City and Other Classic Spots

- Shurijo Castle Park (Naha): A World Heritage castle site. Because restoration is ongoing, the areas open to visitors may vary over time.
- Kokusai Street (Naha): Naha’s main shopping and dining street, great for souvenirs and Okinawan food.
- American Village (Chatan): An area for shopping, dining and watching the sunset.
- Okinawa World / Gyokusendo Cave (Nanjo): A southern attraction where you can explore a limestone cave and experience traditional culture.
3. Getting Around from Naha: Comparing Transportation Options
There are no railways on Okinawa’s main island, and the Yui Rail monorail mainly serves central Naha. To reach the northern and central sights, you’ll generally need a car. Typical travel times for the main routes from Naha are as follows.
| Route | By car (rental car / taxi) | Local / highway bus |
|---|---|---|
| Central Naha → Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium | About 1 hr 40 min | May require a transfer; takes longer than by car |
| Churaumi Aquarium → Kouri Island | About 25 min | Infrequent service |
| Central Naha → Cape Manzamo (Onna) | About 1 hr | Infrequent service |
| Central Naha → Former Navy Underground HQ (south) | About 20 min | Sometimes reachable by bus or Yui Rail from the city |
| Central Naha → JUNGLIA OKINAWA (Yanbaru) | About 2 hours | Infrequent service |
Central Naha and the south are fairly easy to reach by bus or Yui Rail. The north and central areas, on the other hand, are farther away, and public transportation is limited by infrequent service and transfers. Here’s how the main options compare.
| Factor | Local / highway bus | Rental car | Chartered taxi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schedule / frequency | △ Infrequent service | ◎ Go anytime | ◎ Depart when you like |
| Getting to the north and central areas | △ Transfers may be needed | ○ You have to drive | ◎ Direct, no transfers |
| Driving burden | ◎ None | × Driving on unfamiliar roads | ◎ None |
| Drinking on your trip | ◎ No problem | × The driver can’t drink | ◎ Everyone can enjoy |
| Luggage | △ You carry it | ○ Can stay in the car | ◎ Stays in the car while you sightsee |
| Cost (small groups) | ◎ Cheapest | ○ Depends on group size | △ Pricier for small groups; cheaper split among more people |
4. Planning Your Itinerary | 3 Days/2 Nights or 4 Days/3 Nights
We recommend staying in Naha and setting aside a full day for the distant north. Here’s a sample 4-day/3-night itinerary.
| Day | Sample plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive at Naha Airport → half day (about 3 hours) at the southern war memorial sites → stay in Naha |
| Day 2 | Spend a full day in the north: Churaumi Aquarium, Kouri Island and more |
| Day 3 | Half day (about 4 hours) in the central area: Cape Manzamo, the Blue Cave and more; relax at your hotel or the beach in the afternoon |
| Day 4 | Shopping on Kokusai Street → Naha Airport |
For a 3-day/2-night trip, you can adjust to fit your schedule, for example by combining Days 1 and 2. With kids, you might swap Day 2 for the Nago area; if you want to soak up nature, try Yanbaru instead.
Where to Stay | Naha or a Resort Area?

Deciding which sights you want to see first and then choosing where to stay helps cut down on unnecessary travel.
| Area | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Central Naha | Travelers who want a mix of sightseeing, food and shopping | Close to the airport, with Kokusai Street and plenty of restaurants. The south is nearby; visit the north on day trips |
| Resort areas such as Onna | Travelers who want to relax at a seaside resort | Close to Cape Manzamo and the Blue Cave, with easy access to the north. Requires a drive to Naha and the airport |
5. When to Go | Okinawa Sightseeing by Season
- Spring (March–May): Mild weather makes this a good time for sightseeing. Depending on when you go, the water may still be cool for swimming.
- Summer (June–August): The best season for the sea, but the sun is strong, so mixing in indoor attractions (such as the aquarium) during the day keeps things comfortable. Typhoons may affect your trip.
- Autumn (September–November): Typhoons may affect travel in September and October. By November the heat eases, making it a good time for walking around.
- Winter (December–February): Not swimming season, but sights are often less crowded, making it a good time for the aquarium and castle ruins.
6. For Distant Areas, Consider a Chartered Taxi (NearMe)
In areas like the north, where public transportation means transfers and infrequent service, and a rental car means a lot of driving, a chartered taxi is another option. NearMe offers chartered taxi courses by destination, departing from and returning to central Naha and Naha Airport.
Overview
NearMe is a reservation-based service that takes you from wherever you like to your destination with no transfers. More than 1.5 million passengers have booked with us, with a ride satisfaction rating of 4.6/5.0 (October 2019 to September 2025). In Okinawa, you can travel from central Naha or Naha Airport to popular spots such as the Churaumi Aquarium, Kouri Island, Yanbaru and JUNGLIA OKINAWA. Because it’s a chartered taxi, you decide your destinations, stops and timing.
Courses and Prices from Naha
Prices are fixed by duration and per vehicle. The price is the same for up to 9 passengers, so it doesn’t go up as your group grows.

| Onna: Cape Manzamo & Blue Cave | 4 hours ¥37,000 / 5 hours ¥44,000 / 6 hours ¥51,000 | Cape Manzamo, Blue Cave, Ryukyu Mura | 4 hours covers the classics; 5–6 hours leaves time for lunch and shopping |

| One-way chartered taxi to JUNGLIA OKINAWA or the Churaumi Aquarium | See the booking page for prices | Central Naha / Naha Airport ⇔ each facility | For travelers who know where they’re going and just need the ride |
Because chartered taxis have a fixed per-vehicle price, the cost per person goes down as your group gets bigger. Here’s an example for the Churaumi Aquarium & Bise Fukugi Tree Road course (7 hours, ¥61,500).
| Group size | Price per person (approx.) |
|---|---|
| 2 | About ¥30,800 |

8. Summary
The most efficient way to see Okinawa is to stay in Naha and visit the classic spots in a few chosen areas. The south is close to Naha and the central area can be covered in half a day, but the north is far away with limited public transportation, so deciding how you’ll get around in advance helps you make the most of your sightseeing time.
If you’d like to skip the driving and choose your own destinations and timing, consider a NearMe chartered taxi. The price is fixed when you book, so there are no surprise charges on the day. Give it a try on your next trip to Okinawa.
