Check NearMe RatesKitakyushu Airport is the only offshore airport in Kyushu that operates 24 hours a day. Inside the airport, you’ll find a foot bath where you can watch planes, an observation deck, and a life-size figure of Maetel from Galaxy Express 999. Within a 30-minute drive are Kokura Castle and Shiraishi Beach, and about 35 minutes away is Hiraodai, one of Japan’s leading karst plateaus, so there’s no shortage of places to visit.
In short, the appeal of sightseeing at Kitakyushu Airport is that you can enjoy the airport itself, and that it serves as the gateway to Kokura, Mojiko, and Hiraodai. The airport alone is good for 1 to 2 hours, and if you venture out to the surrounding area, you can enjoy anywhere from half a day to a full day of sightseeing.

Kitakyushu Airport Basics | A 24-Hour Airport and How to Get There
Kitakyushu Airport opened on March 16, 2006, and celebrated its 20th anniversary in March 2026. It is an offshore airport connected to the mainland by a bridge, and it is the home base of Starflyer. As of September 2026, it has domestic flights to Haneda and direct international flights to South Korea (Seoul and Cheongju) and Taipei.
The terminal building is compact.
- 1st floor: Arrivals (convenience store, car rental counters, bus ticket counter)
- 2nd floor: Departures (check-in counters, life-size Maetel figure, souvenir shops)
- 3rd floor: Observation deck, restaurant area
There is no train service to Kitakyushu Airport. Access is mainly by bus, taxi, or car.

Things to Do Inside the Airport

The airport alone has plenty of spots to pass the time.
Foot Bath | Soak Your Feet While Watching Planes
You can soak your feet while watching planes. In Kyushu, this is something only Kitakyushu Airport offers.
- Hours: 8:30–17:30 (may be closed due to weather or other conditions)
- Fees: Adults ¥100, children ¥50, Kitakyushu Airport foot bath limited-edition towel ¥100
Observation Deck on the 3rd Floor
From the observation deck on the 3rd floor, you can enjoy close-up views of planes taking off and landing in a 360-degree panorama. Surrounded by the sea, the airport also offers wide-open views of sky and ocean.
Life-Size Maetel Figure
Near the center of the 2nd floor, a life-size figure of Maetel from Galaxy Express 999 welcomes travelers. Kitakyushu is where the author, Leiji Matsumoto, spent his boyhood years. It’s a great spot for a commemorative photo.
New Kitakyushu Airport Connecting Bridge | The Only Sightseeing Spot You Can Reach on Foot
The only sightseeing spot you can reach on foot at this airport floating on the sea is the New Kitakyushu Airport Connecting Bridge. At 2,100 m long, it is one of the longest bridges that can be crossed free of charge. Walking over the sea is exhilarating, but it can also be very windy.
3 Local Souvenirs
Kitakyushu’s specialties are available at the shops inside the airport.
| Souvenir | Features | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Neji Chocolate | Screw-shaped chocolate that can be tightened and loosened like a bolt and nut | Izutsuya shop |
| Mikazuki Croissant | A croissant that’s crisp on the outside and moist and chewy inside | Sora no Oka deep sky corner (1st floor, 7:00–20:30) |
| Shiroya Sunny Pan & Omelette | Condensed-milk bread and fluffy cream-filled sweets | Buzen Kaido Furusato Corner (6:00–20:30) |
There is also a duty-free shop, “SKY DUTY FREE,” in the international boarding area.
Before Your Flight, Head to the Lounge
On the 2nd floor, after security, there is a card lounge called “Lounge Himawari.” It’s free for holders of eligible gold cards or higher, and even without a card you can enter for ¥880 (tax included). It is open 7:00–21:00 and cannot be used after arrival. For details, see our article on the Kitakyushu Airport lounge.
Sightseeing Spots Around the Airport | 20–30 Minutes by Car

Within a 30-minute drive of the airport, you’ll find a cluster of spots for enjoying nature and history.
- Shiraishi Beach (about 20 minutes by car): The only natural beach in Kanda Town. It’s a popular clamming spot in spring, and also gaining attention as a photogenic spot for dreamy photos.
- Buzen Kokubunji Three-Story Pagoda (about 25 minutes by car): A 23.5 m three-story pagoda. Among three-story pagodas, it is the second largest after Hokki-ji in Nara.
- Chikujo Town Bussankan Metase no Mori (about 25 minutes by car): A local products market built in red brick and white. It sells vegetables and fruit picked that morning, and has a playground and a walking path lined with metasequoia trees.
- Kokura Castle (about 30 minutes by car): The castle keep, rebuilt in 1959 (Showa 34), is said to be the third largest in Japan. It is a famous spot for about 300 cherry trees in spring and autumn foliage in fall.
- Nagaihama Park (about 30 minutes by car): A park that opened in July 2020. You can try marine activities such as flyboarding, which are rare in Kyushu.
- Imagawa Riverside (about 30 minutes by car): In spring, 1,000 cherry trees line both banks, blooming alongside rapeseed flowers.
Hiraodai Area | Spectacular Scenery and Limestone Caves, 35–45 Minutes by Car

If you’re willing to go a little farther, we recommend the Hiraodai area, one of Japan’s leading karst plateaus.
- Hiraodai (about 35 minutes by car): A representative karst plateau said to have about 200 limestone caves. White limestone rocks scattered across the grassland look like a flock of sheep, which is why the area is called “Yogunbaru” (the field of sheep flocks).
- Hirotani Wetland (about 35 minutes by car): The only wetland in Fukuoka Prefecture. Wild plants unique to wetlands grow here naturally.
- Terraced rice fields in the Tokakuji district (about 35 minutes by car): Beautiful terraced rice fields selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Rural Landscapes.
- Senbutsu Limestone Cave (about 40 minutes by car): One of the largest limestone caves in Japan and a national natural monument. You can explore up to about 900 m into the cave.
- Seiryu-kutsu Cave (about 45 minutes by car): The largest limestone cave in Hiraodai, about 3 km long. It is a national natural monument and was also a sacred site for mountain ascetics.
Hiraodai is at a high elevation, and it’s cool inside the caves. It’s a good idea to bring something to layer on.
Mojiko Retro and Kokura Area

The classic Kitakyushu sightseeing spots are Mojiko Retro and Kokura.
- Mojiko Retro (about 35 minutes by car): Mojiko, which once flourished as a trading port, still has charming historic buildings. It’s a popular sightseeing area where you can stroll the streets and enjoy local food, and it’s also home to the Kyushu Railway Museum, a railway-themed park.
- Kanmon Straits: The strait that separates Honshu and Kyushu, which you can enjoy along with Mojiko Retro.
- Kokura area: Enjoy Kokura Castle and a stroll around town. Kokura Station is about 40 minutes from the airport by limousine bus.
