Enjoying the Airport

Inside Tokushima Airport

There are spots inside the airport where you can enjoy the character of Tokushima.

The 3rd-Floor Observation Hall

On the same floor as the 3rd-floor departure lobby, there is an observation hall where you can watch the planes. According to visitor reviews, it is at the end of a tunnel-shaped passage behind the shops and restaurants.

Tokushima Specialty Food

The 3rd floor is lined with restaurants where you can taste Tokushima specialties.

  • Tokushima Takara Ramen: A shop serving the local specialty, Tokushima ramen. It is known for its thick, mellow soup and thin noodles, and its signature “Takara Ramen” comes in two types: light or rich.
  • Awazen ODORI: Enjoy dishes made with the branded chicken Awa Odori-dori and ingredients from across Shikoku. It also offers a good selection of small dishes that go well with drinks.
  • Self-Service Udon Maruishi: Udon in a light, slightly sweet soy-sauce broth that you can easily enjoy in a self-service style.
  • Nikusui specialty shop

Souvenirs

The shops carry souvenirs unique to Tokushima. These include “Sudachi Men” noodles made with sudachi citrus juice, “Bizan” sweets filled with Naruto Kintoki sweet potato paste, and Kinchō manju. Sweets, sake, and crafts are also available.

The 1st-Floor General Information Desk and Baggage Delivery

At the general information desk on the 1st floor, you can get directions to tourist attractions and to central Tokushima. Wheelchairs and strollers are also available to borrow.

The baggage delivery service is also convenient. Leave your luggage at the information desk, and it will be delivered to your accommodation in Tokushima Prefecture the same day. You can travel light and start sightseeing right away.

Spend Your Time Before Departure in the Lounge

If you want to relax before your flight, there is the “Vortis” lounge on the 3rd floor. It can also be used after arrival. For details, see our article on Tokushima Airport lounges.

The Naruto Area | Whirlpools and Masterpieces of World Art

Naruto Strait

The highlight of sightseeing in Tokushima is the Naruto area. It takes about 50 minutes by bus from the airport to Naruto Park.

The Naruto Whirlpools | One of the World’s Three Great Tidal Currents

The tidal current in the Naruto Strait is one of the “World’s Three Great Tidal Currents,” alongside Italy’s Strait of Messina and Canada’s Seymour Narrows. During spring tides, some of the largest whirlpools in the world form, exceeding 20 m in diameter.

There are two ways to enjoy the whirlpools up close.

  • Uzu no Michi (Onaruto Bridge Promenade): A seaside walkway built into the girders of the Onaruto Bridge. From the observation room at the end, you can look straight down on the whirlpools through a glass floor.
  • Whirlpool-viewing boats: Boats departing from Naruto Tourist Port let you experience the powerful whirlpools from the water.

Uzu no Michi’s hours and fees are as follows.

Otsuka Museum of Art

The Otsuka Museum of Art, opened in 1998, is the world’s first museum of ceramic-board reproductions of famous paintings. It recreates the world’s masterpieces at full size on ceramic boards, including da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” and Picasso’s “Guernica.” The star attraction, the Sistine Chapel mural, is breathtaking. Photography is allowed.

The Tokushima City Area | Awa Odori Kaikan and Mt. Bizan

Mt. Bizan

Central Tokushima City has classic spots where you can enjoy culture and scenery in one go. It takes about 30 minutes by bus from the airport to JR Tokushima Station.

Awa Odori Kaikan

At the Awa Odori Kaikan, Awa Odori performances are held every day, not only during the main festival in August. In the daytime performances, the hall’s resident troupe appears four times a day (40 minutes each). In the evening performances, famous troupes appear in rotation. There is also a corner where you can try Awa Odori, and you can join the dance on the spot.

On the 3rd floor, the “Awa Odori Museum” lets you learn about the history and culture of Awa Odori. The souvenir shop inside sells products from Tokushima Prefecture.

Awagin Mt. Bizan Ropeway

The “Awagin Mt. Bizan Ropeway,” which departs right next to the Awa Odori Kaikan, takes you to the summit of Mt. Bizan. The gondola is fully glass-walled, and from the summit you can see all the way across Tokushima City, Naruto, and the Kii Peninsula.

The Awa Odori Kaikan and Mt. Bizan are about a 10-minute walk from JR Tokushima Station.

Dinner of Awa Odori-dori Chicken

In the evening, we recommend the branded chicken “Awa Odori-dori” around Tokushima Station. It has a great texture, and the more you chew, the more flavor spills out. Enjoy it as yakitori or small dishes together with Tokushima’s local sake.

Things to Know During the Awa Odori Season (August 12–15)

Tokushima City’s biggest event is Awa Odori, held every year from August 12 to 15. Over these four days, more than one million visitors come, and the city becomes extremely crowded.

If you’re visiting during this period, book your transportation and accommodation early. While you can enjoy the festival’s energy, securing a way to get around requires care. Paid viewing seats are also available, so consider them if you want to avoid the crowds.
