Plan Description

A half-day tracing the memory of the Battle of Okinawa, with a private car and driver. In Tomigusuku you walk the tunnels of the Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters, hand-dug into the hillside and left much as they were. At Okinawa Peace Memorial Park in Mabuni you pass the Cornerstone of Peace, where the names of everyone who died in the battle are inscribed side by side. The day closes at the adjacent Himeyuri Monument and Peace Museum, which records the schoolgirls mobilised as a nursing corps. Local buses serve all three sites only sparsely, so a private charter is what makes the full circuit possible in an afternoon.

Q. The underground headquarters is said to have many steps. Can guests with limited mobility still visit?

Reaching the tunnels involves descending 105 steps from the entrance. Wheelchair users can enter from the exit side instead, and two power-assisted wheelchairs are available, but this must be arranged in advance. If you prefer, we can drop this stop and spend the time at Peace Memorial Park and the Himeyuri Monument instead.

Q. Can we choose the departure time?

Yes, within the opening hours of the sites. The Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters is open 9:00-17:00 (tickets until 16:30) and the Himeyuri Peace Museum 9:00-17:25 (last entry 17:00), so we recommend departing by around 14:00 if you plan to visit all three.
