Plan Description

Leave Nagoya in the morning and head into the Kiso Valley on the Chuo Expressway. After walking the steep stone-paved lane of Magome-juku, you cross Magome Pass at 790m and follow the old Nakasendo highway down to Tsumago-juku, about 9km and three hours on foot. These two post towns still look much as they did in the Edo period, and this is the day that connects them on foot. While you are on the trail your driver takes the car and your luggage around to Tsumago, so you carry nothing over the pass. Lunch and a slow wander through Tsumago follow, and you are back in Nagoya by early evening.

Q. Are lunch and museum admission in Tsumago included in the price?

They are not. The price covers the vehicle, your driver, fuel, expressway tolls, parking fees and tax; meals and admission to individual sites are paid locally on the day.

Q. Can the hike be done in the rain or in winter?

Parts of the pass are unpaved or stone-paved, so the footing becomes slippery in wet weather. From December through March, when snow and ice are likely, we suggest replacing the hike with a drive between Magome-juku and Tsumago-juku and exploring both post towns on foot; please check road conditions with us by the day before.

Q. Can we skip the walk and be driven from Magome to Tsumago?

Yes. If you prefer not to hike, the car takes you from Magome-juku to Tsumago-juku in about 20 minutes. The plan also works when part of your group walks and the rest rides, because the car waits on the Tsumago side either way.
