Plan Description
Nikko is about two hours from Tokyo each way, and a full day by private car means no train-and-bus transfers. Spend the morning at the UNESCO World Heritage Toshogu Shrine, taking in the carvings of the Yomeimon Gate, the Three Wise Monkeys and the Sleeping Cat among the halls dedicated to Ieyasu. After a yuba lunch near the temple, the drive continues up the switchbacks of Irohazaka; from the Akechidaira lookout, Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji and Mt. Nantai come together in one view.

Q. Are admission to Toshogu Shrine and the Kegon Falls elevator included?
They are not included. Admission to Nikko Toshogu Shrine, the Kegon Falls observation elevator and the Akechidaira ropeway are all paid on site, as is lunch. The tour price covers the vehicle, driver, fuel, tax and all expressway tolls including the Tohoku and Nikko-Utsunomiya roads.
Q. Irohazaka is said to get congested during autumn leaves — can everything still fit into 10 hours?
From mid-October to early November, the climb up Irohazaka alone can take two to three hours in heavy traffic, and the standard 10-hour tour may not allow a full round trip to upper Nikko. An earlier 7:00 departure or the 12-hour tour is recommended during this period; on the day, the driver can also suggest dropping Lake Chuzenji to keep to schedule. Extensions beyond 10 hours are billed in 30-minute increments.
Q. Can we still reach Lake Chuzenji in winter? Are the cars fitted with winter tires?
From December to March, the road beyond Irohazaka can be closed at times due to snow and ice, and upper Nikko may not be reachable if road authorities restrict access. Winter dispatch uses winter tires or chains where required (please confirm equipment at the time of booking). If the road is closed, the itinerary shifts to temples and shrines around Toshogu, such as Futarasan Shrine and Taiyuin, to use the time well.
