Plan Description
Leave your hotel at nine and start at Nagoya Castle, where the golden shachihoko sit on the keep roof. You walk through the reconstructed Honmaru Palace with its painted sliding doors, then the Ninomaru garden. Next comes Tokugawaen, a classic Japanese strolling garden, and Atsuta Shrine, home to one of Japan's three imperial regalia. The morning ends in Osu, a covered shopping district good for street food and second-hand finds. Between the castle and Atsuta the subway needs a change, which is exactly where a car earns its keep.

Q. Can we go inside the castle keep?
No. The keep closed on 6 May 2018 ahead of its planned timber reconstruction and the interior is still off limits. What you can visit is the reconstructed Honmaru Palace inside the grounds, along with the Ninomaru garden, the stone walls and the moats; the keep is viewed from outside.
Q. Is admission to Nagoya Castle and Tokugawaen included?
It is not. The price covers the vehicle, your driver, fuel, expressway tolls, parking fees and tax; admission to each site is paid locally on the day.
Q. Are four stops in four hours too rushed?
Each stop is planned at 30 to 70 minutes, which is comfortable but selective. If you want longer at the castle, or a sit-down meal in Osu, the five-hour option at ¥37,000 gives you the extra room.
