Plan Description
Sapporo to Otaru takes about an hour on the expressway. You start at Asakusa Bridge, looking down the canal at the line of stone warehouses along the far bank, then walk Sakaimachi Street where Meiji and Taisho era buildings are still in use as shops, stopping for the oil lamps at Kitaichi Glass and a slice of cheesecake fresh from the oven at the LeTAO main store. The last stretch takes in Otaru Art Base and the former Nippon Yusen building before the drive back. With the car alongside you, none of it depends on walking the hills or waiting for a bus.

Q. Can we add the Mt. Tengu viewpoint?
Yes, with the 5-hour option. Note that the Mt. Tengu ropeway closes for two maintenance periods each year, roughly early to late November and late March to late April, and the return ticket costs 1,800 yen for adults (2,000 yen in winter), paid separately. Let us know when booking if you would like it included.
Q. Why is 4 hours the standard rather than 6?
Otaru's main sights sit within one walkable stretch from the canal to Sakaimachi Street, so 4 hours covers them comfortably including the drive each way. It also leaves your afternoon free in Sapporo, which makes better use of a single day.
Q. Does it still work on a snowy winter day?
It does. Otaru is built on slopes and the streets freeze in winter, so walking and public transport eat into your time. A private car drops you at the door of each stop, which is exactly when the difference is largest.
