Plan Description

You leave the hotel as the light goes, starting at Asahiyama Memorial Park where a short flight of steps opens onto the whole city stretching out to Ishikari Bay. From there it is a short drive to Mt. Moiwa, where a ropeway and a small cable car carry you to the summit. The grid of Sapporo's streets reads as a lattice of light below, and on a clear night you can pick out the fishing boats on the bay. On the way back you pass the illuminations of Odori Park and the TV Tower. These viewpoints are awkward to link on foot and by tram, especially in the cold.

Q. Are the ropeway tickets included?

They are not. The combined return ticket for the Mt. Moiwa ropeway and mini cable car is 1,800 yen for adults and 900 yen for children, paid on site. Operating hours are 10:30 to 22:00 in summer and 11:00 to 22:00 in winter, with the last ride up at 21:30.

Q. What is the best departure time?

Around 30 minutes before sunset. Sapporo's sunset moves by more than three hours across the year, from just after 7pm near the summer solstice to around 4pm near the winter solstice, so we propose a start time to match your date. Going up while it is still light and watching the city darken is the better experience.

Q. Is Mt. Moiwa reachable in winter?

Yes, but the route changes. The Mt. Moiwa toll road is closed from mid-November to early April, so during that period we board at the ropeway base station rather than the mid-slope car park. On snowy nights the waiting is indoors, which is exactly when a private car helps most.
